Welcome to Mondipedia

Mondipedia is built around a simple, but powerful idea: To build a cloud based collaboration platform, that enables companies to exchange documents with all trading partners in a simple, rapid and highly automated way.

With a semantic repository as the “hub” each company’s standard or version needs to be mapped only once to be integrated with all other trading partner’s standard or version. This opens up the possibility of n-n data exchange, without a point to point mapping between trading partners. The whole is more than the sum of its parts as patterns of information emerge.

Mondipedia is primarily a repository of semantic supply chain documents.

  • You will find detailed EDI/XML specifications of several companies here. More than just the specifications, you will find a semantic keyword attached to each field. This repository has been built from publicly available EDI specifications of these companies(PDF, XLS etc).
  • You will find sample documents, sample maps for several companies.
  • You will find implementation guides and more.

Why Semantic Repository

Common data elements and definitions are necessary to deal with external business partners in any industry. So you need a common language to describe data shared by all actors from the value chain, e.g. buyers, supplier, retailers or intermediaries. As an example, any Purchase Order has an Order Number, Item Quantity, Part Numbers etc. Some companies may choose to use Buyer Part Numbers, while some may choose to use EAN, or UPC part numbers. Some companies may choose to send buyer name, address, contact details in the Purchase Order, while some may not.

Different XML standards use different XML elements to identify these values. Mondipedia tries to bring some method to the madness, by providing a central repository of:

1) Keywords: These are Synonyms or concepts of commonly used business terms. This a superset of keywords used in many industries. It is not enough just to define the keywords, we also have to define the synonyms for these keywords. For ex: DocumentID and PurchaseOrder Number can be synonyms. In some cases, the synonyms depend on the document type. For example: SenderCredential and BuyerId might be synonyms in a PurchaseOrder, where as in an Invoice, SenderCredential and SupplierId are synonyms. 2) Document Layout of Business Documents: While it is true that several companies use a common standard like X12, Ariba or IDOC or xCBL, due to different business requirements, the information and the document layout differs from company to company. Mondipedia provides a list of fields used by different companies, and links them to a common Mondipedia dictionary.
